Cheek Fat Removal

Wisconsin Cheek Fat (Buccal Fat Pad) Removal

WHAT IS BUCCAL FAT PAD REMOVAL?

Buccal fat are pads of fat that enlarge the lower part of the cheeks. These “chubby cheeks,” or “chipmunk cheeks,” can result from a variety of conditions. Overweight is one, while a genetic predisposition can also cause one to have round cheeks.

Buccal fat pad lipectomy offers a solution to those who want to reduce the size of their cheeks. A buccal fat removal procedure removes excess fat from this area, which will slim the cheeks and contour the face. This can help people achieve a more chiseled appearance.

ARE YOU A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BUCCAL FAT REMOVAL?

As with any elective surgical procedure, realistic expectations and good health are prerequisites. Men and women can both benefit from a buccal fat pad lipectomy procedure. An individual with excessive fullness in the lower cheek area may be an ideal candidate for a buccal fat removal procedure.

BUCCAL FAT PAD REMOVAL PROCEDURE

The buccal fat pad lipectomy procedure will be performed at our Middleton on-site surgical facility. Under IV sedation an incision is made on the inside of the cheek. The incision exposes the fascia and fibers of the main cheek muscle called the buccinator. By applying pressure externally under the cheekbone the excess fat will protrude through the incision for easy removal by Dr. Parfitt. After the excess fat is removed, the incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.

RECOVERY FROM CHEEK FAT REMOVAL

With cheek fat removal, patients can expect swelling and bruising. This will result in a tight and tender sensation that may last several weeks. You may be instructed to rinse with a mouthwash or an antiseptic solution several times a day.

An in-office appointment on day 6-post surgery is done to check the progress of healing and remove any sutures that did not dissolve on their own. A restrictive diet is required until this time. Patients should avoid eating highly acidic foods such as tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit and cherries. These foods can irritate the incisions. Patients should also avoid foods with high bacterial levels, such as rare meats.

Most patients usually return to work a week following surgery. It can take up to four months after surgery to see the final results of the buccal fat pad removal procedure. All patients are required to follow the post-operative instructions to ensure better healing and to reduce any possible complications.
