Board-Certification for Plastic Surgeons vs. Facial Plastic Surgeons

The training and certification pathways differ for plastic surgery doctors who perform surgery on the entire body versus plastic surgery doctors who specialize in facial surgeries.

Dr. Parfitt is a double-board certified facial plastic surgeon and is certified by:

American Board of Facial Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery
American Board of Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery

Facial Plastic Surgeons

Facial Plastic Surgeons, such as Dr. Parfitt, typically do 1 year of general surgery, followed by 4-5 years of head and neck surgery residency, followed by a 1 year of facial plastic surgery fellowship. Board certification in facial plastic surgery then requires:

1) board certification in otolaryngology-head & neck surgery or plastic surgery (both are ABMS boards)
2) passing the written and oral board exams in facial plastic surgery
3) submitting 2 consecutive years of surgical cases with a minimum of 50 qualifying cases per year.

It is a rigorous, difficult and focused certification process. According to the American Board of Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) the most frequently performed procedure by a facial plastic surgeon is Blepharoplasty closely followed by Rhinoplasty.
Dr. Parfitt is a specialist in facial plastic surgery and is certified by the American Board of Facial Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery

It is clear that an ABFPRS Facial Plastic Surgeon such as Dr. Parfitt has more specialized training and experience in facial surgery than an ASPS Plastic Surgeon.

General Plastic Surgeons

General plastic surgeons typically do 3-5 years of general surgery residency (not plastic surgery) followed by a 2-year residency in general plastic surgery. Board certification in plastic surgery then requires:

1) board-certification in general surgery (an ABMS board)
2) passing the written and oral board exams in plastic surgery
3) submitting a case log of 9 consecutive months of surgical cases, with a minimum of 50 qualifying cases.

In the end, surgeons are certified to practice plastic surgery on all areas of the body.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the most frequently performed procedure by a general plastic surgeon is Breast Augmentation.
