WHAT IS SUBMENTAL LIPOSUCTION?

Submental liposuction, also known as neck liposuction, is the procedure designed to remove unwanted fat from below the chin. Liposuction is the process of removing significant amount of fat from various parts of the body using a long narrow suction tube that is inserted through small incisions.

Over time, the neckline ages like the rest of the face. The skin begins to sag and lose elasticity, while fat accumulates under the chin and creates a “double-chin” appearance. Dr. Parfitt performs neck liposuction procedures to slim and reshape the neck to create more definition.

NECK LIPOSUCTION CANDIDATES

As with any elective surgical procedure, realistic expectations and good health are prerequisites. Submental liposuction is a popular procedure for both men and women.

If you are concerned with excessive skin and fat in the neck area, you may be an ideal candidate for a neck liposuction procedure.

THE NECK LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE

Submental liposuction is done as an out-patient surgery with “twilight” anesthesia or local anesthesia in our private Middleton surgery center.

Submental liposuction requires an incision in a natural crease just under the chin in the mid-line. By removing excess fat, Dr. Parfitt can re-contour the upper neck region below the chin to reduce the prominence of a “double chin”. If the patient is younger than 45 years of age, the overlying skin will shrink to conform to the reduced volume, much like a woman’s abdominal skin shrinks following childbirth.  As we age, our skin becomes less elastic and less likely to “re-drape” snugly following significant amounts of fat removal. Tightening of the resulting loose skin becomes necessary. Patients beyond the age of 45, sub-mental liposuction is usually accompanied by a neck lift procedure. The incisions for a neck lift are hidden behind the ear and scalp.

Following the submental liposuction procedure, the patient is expected to wear a light head-wrap which puts some pressure under the chin to keep swelling down and to help the skin conform nicely to the new neck contour. The wrap is worn continuously for the first 6 days following surgery. The more reliably this compression is worn the better the expected results will be.

SUBMENTAL LIPOSUCTION RECOVERY

Following discharge, the patient is urged to remain elevated in an upright position to help decrease swelling and accelerate healing. Sutures will be removed at day 6-post surgery. Some swelling and bruising may persist but most patients are able to return to work or school after the first week. All patients are required to follow the post-operative instructions to ensure better healing and to reduce any possible complications.
