A well-proportioned chin helps give definition and balance to the face and contributes significantly to one’s profile. When people evaluate their face in the mirror, most focus on the condition of their skin, the shape and size of their noses, their ear shape, or their sagging jowls.
Few examine their chins with the same discerning eye, but most agree that having a “weak chin” is definitely not an asset. Chin augmentation is the name of the procedure designed to modify the projection of your chin and enhance your profile.
Skilled surgeons, like Dr. Parfitt, who do a lot of rhinoplasties (surgery of the nose), are often the first to suggest that changes in chin shape or size might enhance a profile just as much as their rhinoplasty. Dr. Parfitt often recommends chin surgery in addition to nose surgery when he sees that chin augmentation is desirable in achieving facial balance and harmony. Fortunately, this is a relatively undemanding procedure that can make a significant difference in overall facial appearance.
As with any elective surgical procedure, realistic expectations and good health are prerequisites. Men and women are both candidates for a chin augmentation procedure.
When the chin is too small for the face, augmentation can often produce dramatic improvement in facial features. If one examines his/her profile (side view) in a mirror, the chin projection should approach a vertical line dropped from the lower lip. If you are concerned with a recessed chin or facial asymmetry, you may be an ideal candidate for chin enhancement.
A balanced, pleasing profile can be obtained by inserting an implant. The chin is an important feature of the face as a whole and the result of chin augmentation can be better facial harmony and greater self-confidence.
Another procedure that improves the chin area is submental (neck) liposuction, where excess fatty tissue is removed to better define the chin and neckline.
Your consultation with Dr. Parfitt will help you decide on the type of surgery that best addresses your concerns. He will determine if chin augmentation is the best procedure to achieve your facial harmony.

To augment your chin, Dr. Parfitt begins by making an incision in the natural crease line just under the chin. By gently stretching the tissue in this area, he then creates a tight space where the implant can be inserted. After the implant is inserted, Dr. Parfitt then uses fine sutures to close the incision, which usually becomes imperceptible. Immediately following surgery, Dr. Parfitt applies a dressing that will remain in place for one to three days.
Swelling can be present during the first few weeks following surgery, this will result in some tenderness and a tight or stretched sensation that typically subsides within a week. While swelling is present, most patients are more comfortable with soft foods or liquid diets.
Sutures are removed on the sixth day post surgery and patients typically return to normal activities on or before this date. After about five to six weeks, most of the swelling will be gone. Contact sport and strenuous activity may be limited or prohibited for about one month following surgery. All patients are required to follow the post-operative instructions to ensure better healing and to reduce any possible complications.

After three days post surgery, typically the only indication of surgery is a few sutures below the chin. Some patients feel comfortable returning to non-strenuous activities at this point. Sutures are removed on the sixth day post surgery.
Twilight anesthesia, also known as IV sedation, is used. All facial surgery procedures are performed at our Middleton on-site surgical facility.
Swelling may be present following surgery. During this time, most patients are more comfortable with soft foods or liquid diets.
The implant material is a medical grade mesh, which is made of a synthetic material that feels very much like the natural tissue found in the chin. It is sized and carved during surgery to allow a custom fitting of the implant to the unique proportions of your face.
Medical grade mesh-like materials are sometimes employed to make artificial heart components or arteries, for reconstruction about the eye and nose, and to repair various parts of the body. It has been used in many cases and has a high record of safety and satisfaction.
After a short time has elapsed, it becomes practically the same consistency as the surrounding tissues and becomes incorporated into them. Due to the fact that the framework of the implant is a mesh, the patient’s own tissues fill in the spaces.
Dr. Parfitt does not use screws with this type of technique. The chin implant does not move since it adheres to the bone.
Although pain is minimal, discomfort is part of the recovery process from a chin augmentation surgery. Over the counter pain medication may be provided if needed.
The cost of chin augmentation surgery varies depending on the techniques and the amount of correction needed for the procedure. Depending on a patient’s facial anatomy, a variety of factors go into achieving an realistic and excellent result. A surgical quote will be presented during your consultation.
